Maryland Death Penalty Repeal On Schedule

Supporters of capital punishment in Maryland have been dealt a blow. A group called MDPetitions tried to secure enough signatures to force the issue on the voters, but they failed to reach the number of signatures needed to move forward in their appeal. The group has attempted to do the same with other issues in the past: was the same group that spearheaded successful petition drives that resulted in three measures on Maryland’s ballot last year: same-sex marriage, in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants and congressional redistricting.

The repeal of Maryland’s death penalty will take place as scheduled on October 1.
