In determining which of the countries is “worse,” the creator looks at factors likely to significantly impact a prisoner’s quality of life, including mattress quality, phone call privileges, ease of communication with neighboring cells, privacy and more.

According to the infographic, an alarming 39% of suicides at Pelican Bay State Prison take place in SHU.

Amnesty International confirms a similar statistic in its 2012 report, The Edge of Endurance: Prison Conditions in California’s Security Housing Units, which covers typical SHU conditions, the long-term effects of solitary on those subjected to it, criteria for SHU assignments, mental health treatment and finally recommendations.

According to the report, “[i]n California, over a five year period from 2006 to 2010, the number of prison suicides averaged 34 a year (higher than the national average), with
